pregnant woman looking at birth control pill packetQuestion: “I got pregnant while taking birth control pills. I kept on taking them for over a month because I didn’t know I was pregnant…will this affect my baby?”

Answer: Preferably, women should stop using birth control pills three months (or for at least two normally occurring periods) before trying to become pregnant. But conception doesn’t always wait for perfect conditions, and sometimes a woman becomes pregnant while taking the Pill. Despite warnings you might have read on your pills’ package insert, there’s no reason for panic. Statistically, there is no good evidence of an increased risk to baby when the mother has conceived while on the Pill. A talk with health care practitioner should further ease your concern.
